Doesn't Steve Buscemi play the same CreepyMan character every time?? (I could very well be thinking of the wrong person...) Great list. Johnny Depp is far and away my hero of character acting, and acting in general. (Who knew, twenty years ago?)
you've got the right guy--how he ever got into acting is beyond me. but he sure pulls off the CreepyMan!
i'm not sure who brian cox is, but i do think the rest are excellent choices...especially johnny depp. that's, uh, why i had such a crush on him as a child, um, for his character-acting abilities...yeah.
brian cox-
25th hour - monty's dad
x-men 2 - evil general
minus man - depressed husband
some movie with willem dafoe and paul bettany - medieval stage actor
steve buscemi (the uncreepy roles)
-28 days - psychiatrist
-the island - unsure, i didn't see that one
-wedding singer - robby knight's wedding singer
-palm's lounge - guy with no future
-con air & every adam sandler movie - some form of weird/creepy/homeless guy
he was kind of sketch but helpful to the heroes in the island. which was actually a lot better than i expected it to be. you should see it & let me know what you think.
1] dustin hoffman
2] bruce willis
3] NOT JOHNNY DEPP!!!!!!!!!!!
4] the bad guy from "Rob Roy"
5] vincent dinofrio
oh, wait!
Mel Gibson!
oh! and Russel Crow!
or maybe i just think australians are cool...
how could i forget dustin hoffman and tim roth (from 'rob roy')?
i disagree with gibson and willis, though. they're both great actors but they're leading men taking lead roles, not the diversified character roles that really flesh out the movie.
"The character actor alters his personality to fit the demands of any role...(he) eliminates those features of personality which are recognizable to audiences and seeks to illustrate and emphasize the personality of the role that is undertaken," - 'introduction to acting' by stanley kahan
Erm, if you're gonna include Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, and Russell Crowe, I think (in all friendliness) you've got no choice but to include Johnny Depp. (I just watched Finding Neverland, and really - you'll have to give a pretty good explanation to convince me otherwise...)
how about joaquin pheonix? i don't know if he's done enough yet to be considered "top ten of all time", but i'm impressed with what i've seen.
i'm on the fence on bruce willis - i like him, but i'm not sure i would consider him great. like david mentioned, he seems to be one-dimensional.
on the other hand, i think mel gibson should be included. i know he did a lot of mad maxx/john mcclane type roles, but here are some movies that expanded his casting:
Passion of the Christ
Forever Young
Man Without a Face
Hamlet
Conspiracy Theory
Patriot
Signs
other actors that i think should be included are tom hanks (non-traditional roles in philadelphia; the green mile; road to perdition; saving private ryan; forrest gump; big; castaway) and joe pesci (my cousin vinny; with honors; goodfellows; man on fire; raging bull).
yeah, tom hanks is good. and i guess mel gibson does have a more character based approach to acting than i thought about.
absolutely agree w/ tom hanks.
i'll cave on bruce willis, i guess. he's a great actor, in that his emotion seems genuine in every instance, but i sea your point. he does play essentially the same role in everything.
& thanks, dad, for backing me up on mel gibson. also good cal on j. pheonix, fro. (like how i avoid spelling his name?:) ) he's played very diverse roles, from "gladiator," to "signs," to "amityville horror..." he's been leading man, sinister antagonist, & second fiddle, & played them all well.
now, becca...
seriously? i'm not mad @ you for liking him (apparently, you're in the majority), but how do you relate him to mel gibson/russell crowe/bruce willis?
i've said my piece on depp. chris and i have argued about his acting merit for years anyway.
was joaquin phoenix really in "amityville horror"? i knew ryan reynolds was inthe new version but i have yet too see it.
okay, as a VERY late add...
the movie that Brian Cox was in with Willem DaFoe was The Reckoning, based on a fantastic novel called Morality Play by Barry Unsworth.
The ONLY reason that I felt it necessary to comment, even at this late date, was becuase I just saw that movie (didn't know it existed) and was suprised at the strength of the book-to-film adaptation.
But the book is still better. So read it! That's an order, to all of you!
